Project type: Internship Project, Softwire
Timeline: June 2025 - August 2025
Summary: Developed a clinical trial recruitment platform for ophthalmologists that matches patients to eligible clinical trials. Introduced service recommendations to enhance both user and staff experiences, resulting in a more efficient and user-friendly system.
Designing for Real-World Challenges at Softwire
Over the summer, I interned at Softwire, a leading software consultancy in London. I worked alongside another design and research intern, Cansin, and six software developer interns, under the guidance of Max, our Design Manager, and Joseph, the Software Lead. During the internship, we completed the end-to-end design process for an international client, delivering a platform that helps ophthalmologists automatically match patients to clinical trials. From conducting user research to designing the interface from scratch and analysing the clinic’s ecosystem, we developed solutions that reduce cognitive load for clinicians and introduce service improvements benefiting both users and staff.

Transforming Patient-Clinician Workflows
Due to the NDA, I cannot share the solution we proposed. However, I can outline the key activities I worked on and the impact of our efforts. Our work included stakeholder and user interviews, developer-design workshops and hand-offs, an iterative design process, and an analysis of the client’s existing service offering. This process culminated in a high-fidelity platform that helps clinicians identify patients eligible for trials and refer them accordingly, alongside service improvement recommendations to streamline the overall workflow.
Saving Clinicians' Time to Improve Patients' Care
Due to the project timeline, we didn’t have the chance to launch the initiative and measure its impact. However, the predicted impact could save clinicians around a minute per patient, freeing up over an hour per day to focus on patient care and improve trial referral rates and accuracy.
My Key Takeaways
Importance of storytelling in design
I quickly learned that a designer’s role goes beyond creating visuals, it’s equally about communicating the purpose and business value behind a solution. Our success relied on telling a clear and compelling story that resonated with the client.
Working alongside developers
Collaborating closely with developers taught me how to design with implementation in mind. Understanding technical constraints early on not only improved the feasibility of my designs but also strengthened communication and respect across disciplines.
Designing for systems, not just screens
I learned to look beyond the interface, considering the broader system and environment. Advocating for service design and holistic solutions helped guide the team and led to recommendations that were well received by the client.
